But it also makes a bigger point that our education system is woefully inept. There are smaller and poorer countries than us that have much better reading literacy and comprehension than the US.
I recently read a study that a good portion of Americans have a 5th grade reading and comprehension level. That is an issue because, as you have stated, it essentially makes it impossible to convey concepts people need to understand to make informed decisions not based purely on emotion or impulse. It's literally who we are where we are.
A significant portion of the electorate are lazy and ignorant (I don't mean that as an insult, just a simple truth. All of us are ignorant of something) and we have to address it or it will be this nation's undoing.
