(11,453 posts)Well, at least it used to work well in the old days. When I was working retail back in the 1970s and 1980s, I would talk as best I could at the customers level. If the customer was a doctor, lawyer, college prof, etc. I had no problem using words like oligarchy, aficionado, autocracy. If the customer was Bubba the plumber, I would probably never use those words. KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid.
You have to read the customer and talk more at their level. Also, ask questions, don't lecture to them. "Do you really want to give rich billionaires trillions of dollars in tax breaks and pay for them by stealing your Social Security money.?" You paid for it.
Another pet peeve - using the word wealthy. I know a guy who thinks his boss is "wealthy". The boss makes 60-70K a year and he is wealthy? I guess this guy thinks he will one day have that job, so a tax break would be great for him. Never use that word. Keep using billionaires and millionaires getting a tax break, never use wealthy.
