We know how they reacted to the arrests, trials, and convictions of people WHO ACTUALLY BROKE LAWS ON JANUARY 6th. We know Trump, among others, called them persecuted and patriots. You could also look back to the FBI under Obama identifying white supremacists as a threat that needed to be watched and the large negative response by Republicans for even a suggestion that surveillance, not sending to jail with no due process, should be done.

Your scenario, which parallels what the Trump administration is doing is what Trump et al claim did happen. This is why Trump constantly refers to retribution. Now, you spoke of this scenario as something completely outlandish. In fact, had it happened, protests would not be limited to Republicans. I could see many organizations, like the ACLU filing suit. This points out a second difference our side, thankfully, would not be silent with a Democratic president doing similar things.
