There were so many first time protestors who joined in small town Missouri …

Schlaiss said they had not taken part in a protest previously, instead only going as far as many drivers did Saturday — honking their horns in support. But the aggressive actions of federal agents, sometimes apparently without due process, drove Schlaiss to get involved.

“I think it’s important that we get people on the streets telling Trump and the government that we’re not OK with what they’re doing,” Schlaiss said. “... A lot of the recent ICE activities — taking parents away from children or even sending children to detention centers that are unsafe — that’s the biggest thing, for sure.”

Tom Zweifel, of Maryville, said it was also his first time at a protest, and struggled to come up with one particular incident that made him feel the need to stand up and be counted.

“Every day it’s a new low,” he said, which is why he wanted to “voice my opinion on the current administration.”
