It might be even worse than you thought. According to Joseph Menn on bluesky, "I count 49 news headlines on mobile app home page right now, not including opinion, sports or cooking. None of them are about the massive protests yesterday."
I like this comment from Alexis Madrigal as well, "This is gotta be intentional. But it's also just weird! How many NYT readers were at protests? What % of subscribers? A substantial %! How can it not be seen as newsworthy, especially given the readership?"
The NYT is not ignoring the protests because they are not newsworthy. That is self evident. And they are not ignoring them because their readers aren't interested. In fact, ignoring them will almost certainly decrease their number of paid subscribers. To me, it is obvious they are ignoring them for ideological purposes. And that really, really, blows.
