New poll: 35 percent of Democrats and 30 percent of Independents agreed the United States is already a dictatorship

There was also widespread criticism of last week’s military parade to ostensibly celebrate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army — which also coincided with Trump’s 79th birthday. Some observers compared the spectacle to the sort normally seen in dictatorships.

But a new YouGov poll taken June 16 – 18, 2025 shows that a significant and ever-increasing percentage of Americans believe that the United States is already a dictatorship under Trump.

Respondents to the poll were asked “Do you agree or disagree with the following?”

When presented with the statement “The U.S. is a dictatorship,” 24 percent of respondents overall said they agree. But if you exclude Republicans or Trump voters, the result swells past a third.



Among Democrats, 35 percent agreed the United States is already a dictatorship, while 30 percent of self-described Independents also agreed. While only 7 percent of Trump voters agreed with the statement, 37 percent of people who voted for Vice President Kamala Harris said the United States is already a dictatorship.
