In reply to the discussion: Can you forgive the people who voted for Trump? [View all]hamsterjill
(16,372 posts)101. No. Absolutely not.
It was apparent in 2016 to me that the people who supported him were genetically, morally, humanly DIFFERENT than I am. I have written them all off. They bring nothing of value to my life when they don't have the capacity to care about others, have empathy for others' suffering, and they damn sure are NOT animal welfare people. Those qualities (compassion, empathy, and animal welfare) are all minimal components that I need for someone to be in my circle.
I haven't missed any of them. Occasionally, one of them will try to re-introduce contact with me and that is always a source of stress. I want them to understand that when I write someone off - it's for good.

No. But it doesn't matter, because most aren't seeking forgiveness, and won't ever.

They don't particularly care for the concept, either. "Empathy is evil" and all that shit..

NO. I haven't spoken to them and I will not unless I ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO for some reason.

Fuck no. Nor can I forgive anyone who STILL identifies as a Republican after the last 10 years, especially after 1/6/21.

If it eats away at you, try to let it go. You can't have their hate consume your soul. Don't let them win another

The thing is, we don't forgive people for their benefit; we forgive to keep ourselves free of resentment and hate.
