In reply to the discussion: Why I will continue to call it Alligator Auschwitz instead of Alligator Alcatraz [View all]Ms. Toad
(37,554 posts)Trump and his cronies are following in the path of Hitler, calling on the same sentiments in their followers - and using many of the same tools, including sending those who sully the white-cis-male purity to concentration camps both within, and outside of, the United States.
But he is not yet sending them to death camps, in which the explicit intention is the mass murder of all who are sent there.
Auschwitz calls to mind the millions murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau; less so the Nuremburg laws, the purging of competent high level administration and replacing them with loyalists, the criminalizing of "undesireables", and initially sending individuals to concentration camps - for purposes short of mass murder.
I think calling out the parallels between early Hitler and Trump is far more critical than using a name more synonymous with the place millions were murdered - a name many have indicated is hurtful.
I think we should avoid the name Auschwitz, but find another way to point out that it is, in fact, a concentration camp.
