(60,479 posts)There are ebbs and flows, but overall there has been a leftward trend in the party on social issues. Consider the change on LGBT rights, abortion, marijuana, etc, and civil rights. Even look at party nominees. Could anyone in the late 1970s have predicted a nominee like Obama or Harris? ( I think a woman nominee would have been predicted, which is why I did not list Clinton. )
On economic issues, there was a big shift to the "new" Democratic party in the early 1990s moving from a party where unions were very powerful. However consider that there was a large shift to populism starting at least in 2016. Biden ran a more populist campaign in 2020 then his centrist Senate positions and governed in a more populist way than any President since LBJ.
