I remember the occasional sermonette on kindness and fair play to those who were “different” in some way.

Comics with war stories reliably had episodes where half a dozen men from all over the US ended up in a foxhole together and had to resolve their own prejudices in order to fight Hitler.

Of course Superman was woke. Why the hell else would he be fighting for truth, justice, and the American Way.

It wasn’t until my own kids were grown that I read a book or two on who was creating comics in those days, and got why such themes were top of mind in that part of the creative world.
