Why put the littlest campers, the first-timers, lowest and closest to the river?

4. At the camp my son attended in the Adirondacks all the bunks were high up on top of a hill. Granted, it was

on a huge lake, not a river, but still. The building closest to the lake was the dining hall and canteen/lounge and the theater. The girls camp across the lake wasn’t as hilly but none of the bunks were right by the water.

As a parent on visiting day, I didn’t love having to walk up and down the hill several times during the day, but obviously safer having the bunks where they were. All the playing fields, arena, tennis courts, etc, were up there, too, because it was flat.

Swimming, sailing, waterskiing, canoeing, etc, were obviously right on the water.
