(7,127 posts)I am like you... no business showing up to volunteer in a disaster zone. I've got to put my wallet where my heart is....
We have a fairly good sized charity locally that specializes in shipping and logistical support for other charities all over the world. They recently donated funds to a small biker dude group in South Carolina that love Harleys and BBQ. This little group used a lot of their own money but also pulled in sponsorship from various regional Harley dealers and grocery chains to buy and stock a food trailer, but they needed to get the right driver training and certification, plus a reliable truck to pull the food trailer. This charity in Ohio came up with the funds.
Another idea is look for charities that help support the first responders that do show up... for instance the Coast Guard has one, as do the unions who back police, fire, and medical personnel. There's even charities that help public schools to rebuild or to support families using the school as a shelter.
I know these are all oddball ideas, I'm just tossing them out there for DU generally.
