It’s because of a type of creepy guy who peddles pseudosciences that this crap is so a part of what is mainstream now - Henry Harpending (human sociobiology), the bell Charles Murray (the Bell Curve creep), Steve Sailor (the VDare Nazi guy). It’s everywhere in subtler forms by now.
I saw this yesterday: perceptual psychology. Soft junk science that has a vaguely spooky feel.
At a time when real hard science is underfunded and endangered (especially when non-profit), this Edward Bernays adjacent behaviorism, nudge theory, psychophysics, affective computing and other bilge growing is not a good sign.
It’s all about fiddling with human brains (and as a hack would). Reality tv, marketing and military-industrial psychological sciences are
poisoning society imo.
Its these manipulative, crass, lightweight or outright pseudoscientific areas from where this bunk emerges. I’d like to see a Sokal hoax take those pseudosciences on. Seeding and planting ideas, fishing, sublimnal advertising…so daft..I can see maybe a rare case of something useful of that kind, but it would be that rare and that hard. Not something you can hack or sleepwalk your way through..
My dad is an honest military officer/vet and he has no patience with that stuff nor with defense contracting nor the people inside the military who sell out soldiers to this civilian Kleptocreepocracy.
I always liked my dad’s military colleagues - decent people. The one time I met a defense contractor locally though in 2014 he sexually harassed me within 3 months..It was a one off, but it definitely gave me the impression that that’s an area where corruption creeps in. It’s pretty deregulated and doesn’t have the same training requirements that the military proper does. Further my dad doesn’t like politically connected military officers who angle for industrial favors, cushy jobs and sell out the military.
Civilization is definitely not a favorite of these guys. Throwbacks..No wonder they dislike the Dept of Education, regular non-profit science etc.
