Keeping the peace at family gatherings is not the source of the present political environment.

The type of silence that has affected our political environment is the silence that comes from voters too cynical, despairing or apathetic to bother to show up at the polls, and those won’t take the time to contact their representatives, but will gladly hand over their personal information to “sign” worthless internet petitions, where their info will be sold, and they will be barraged with fundraising requests.

The silence that clicks “like” on countless internet memes based on falsehoods and misinformation, strengthening the algorithms that produce more of the same, sowing recreational rage-based division and hatred.

But ignoring your drunk uncle’s MAGA rants at Thanksgiving instead of screaming “STFU YOU IGNORANT MOTHERFUCKER!”? Nope.

That has little, if anything to do with the nation’s political division.
