3. I read his book - there's some interesting scholarship that's not too dense.

Sometimes it's a bit superficial and he tries too hard to be clever in spots, but that's OK; what he's trying to do is provide material to refute a lot of what the fundamentalist haters claim Christianity means. So if you have obnoxious fundie relatives or acquaintances who spout Bible verses as support for their hateful politics, you have some weapons.
