Epstein was in charge of Trump's investments. Because Epstein, evil though he was, was very good at investing, Epstein running Trump's portfolio was the reason Trump was doing so well for a while. It was after Epstein fired this client for being a piece of crap that Trump's financial world went to hell.

You know you're in trouble when Jeffrey Epstein thinks you're too toxic to deal with.

Anyway...the "money connections that were very suspicious" angle looks promising. Trump doesn't exactly come across as a "T-bills plus 50 basis points" kinda guy. He wants huge returns and wants them now, which is why he likes crypto. He probably has some very sketchy hedge funds in his financial past.
