...because it took awhile to make cellophane not only transparent, but moisture-proof, needed for most food wrappings. (Before that, it had been mostly used to wrap Whitman's Sampler candies.)

In 1934, cellophane was one of the neat things mentioned in the song, "You're the Top"...which is now stuck in my head.

I think because it's based on cellulose, like rayon (a sort of natural fiber, albeit chemically produced), it's not actually plastic.
