Kinda makes me think of the whole proper way to a top scone in the u.k.- do you do it the Devonshire way (split scone in half, spread clotted cream on each half, then top with a dollop of jam) or the Cornish way (split scone, spread jam, top with dollop of clotted cream).
How about letting people eat something the way that tastes good to them?
