11. Spanish Congregations

There once was a Homeland plan drawn
To raid Spanish congregations at dawn —
From ICE and CBP,
They’d patrol faithfully,
In churches where faithful were relied upon.

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas so bright,
They plotted to act in the dead of the night;
In sanctuaries they’d roam,
Where Spanish is home,
To enforce laws by bureaucratic might.

But three DOJ lawyers stood tall,
From Boston, Providence, New York’s hall;
They’d been briefed on the scheme,
And they cried, “It’s a dream /
Of values that deeply appall!”

The Mass. attorney said, “I attend
A Baptist church — I cannot defend
This plan’s chilling scope
Clashing faith with their hope,
It betrays what our Scriptures intend.”

In Rhode Island too they expressed
That legal concerns had not been suppressed:
Arrests at a church
Would deeply besmirch
The ideals our nation professed.
