4. The authorities have a pretty poor track record on enforcing prohibitions

I see no reason to believe they will become super-competent just because some new words have been added to yet another piece of paper. And then there are those occassions when the authorities have been the oppressors, i.e. Bull Connor

People being actively attacked can't afford to wait for the next FBI undercover sting operation. No, I'm not saying someone needs a 30 gigajoule railgun but anything the police carry in the ordinary day-to-day performance of their duties seems like a good choice for self-defense as it has been professionally vetted using a performance based criteria.
