(20,709 posts)I'm probably guilty of underappreciating the connection from this kind of "harmless" joke to rape and violence against women. It's a luxury men have that we don't need to worry every time we enter the subway or elevator that the normal looking woman is actually going to stalk us around and rape us.
Still, with the OP, my first reaction was that, yes, of course these kinds of comments happen all the time, but that in itself is not proof of the moral decay of society. When the OP starts out on that note, it's going to put people on the defensive, because a lot of them will have heard and/or laughed at and/or made jokes like this. I mean, let's be honest, this is pretty mild in the scheme of things. Try a men's locker room in high school or college.
The guy who made this joke is probably just some immature idiot, who may even grow up some day and become a decent person. The point is that this kind of language perpetuates a culture of objectification which in turn perpetuates the rape culture. It's worth pointing that out explicitly IMO.
