(20,893 posts)I've been there, for vacations with family while growing up, was that there were hardly ANY directions anywhere. We had no idea where the hell we were or how we were supposed to get to where we wanted to go half the time. We were told by several people that it was "just assumed that people knew where they were going" or things like that. It's funny now, but it sure wasn't then. Of course, that was back in '78 and '79, so I don't know if things have changed at all in that respect.
I also remember getting lost while we were walking, and walking past a school with a ton of "white power" and "niggers go away", etc., graffiti on the outer walls. Our parents had to explain to us what had recently been going on in the city and all of the racial tensions. Being a naive young teenager, I couldn't understand how such a "liberal" eastern city could have such attitudes and problems. Ah, the innocence of youth, lol.
