In reply to the discussion: Judge to serve 28 years after making $2 million for sending black children to jail [View all]Igel
(37,008 posts)I can't find anything about a racial breakdown of the kids this judge sentenced.
I can find that Wilkes-Barre's about 11% black, but the county as a whole is <4% black.
If there's a racial disparity, it would really stick out--and be news. But it's not.
I'm sure that there were at least two black kids that the judge sentenced so the title isn't false. Just misleading. We assume that 'black" is somehow relevant to the news story and not just to pretty much the only thing important to the site.
If somebody asks to borrow $10 for food and you say, 'Sorry, I have a dollar" the assumption that shows good will is that you only have a dollar. If you have $1 and that's it, no confusion. But if you have $20 then you'll be taken to be lying. Strictly speaking you're not--but you're showing ill will. It's a kind of discrete duplicity. it uses the usual rules of conversation to mislead, instead of misleading with out-and-out falsehoods.
