I'm unfamiliar with what the coalition proposals are in any detail. But if they are like the current ones currently under review in Scotland, they should be welcomed.

it was under consultation introduced by the SNP in Scotland's parliament and is currently being analysed (http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Justice/law/17867/samesex). Its supported by (with the exception of a few), most members, including the current government (http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2011/09/05153328/1) and opposition parties (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-16816512). Catholic Church and others have already been given insurances that "no religious body or its celebrants should be required to carry out same sex marriages or civil partnership ceremonies" (against their will) Leaving other religious bodies or celebrants able to carry out same sex marriages as they wish and no longer prohibited from doing so.

We've heard all this nonsense before from the likes of the Cardinal, it looks like their needing to be dragged kicking and screaming into this day and age. I hope that his nonsense doesn't deter the proposals from becoming law in England and Wales. Just as I hope it doesn't deter the Scottish government in Scotland.
