(5,946 posts)What happens is that old people retire from the north east and when they sell their house, they can afford a nicer one for less money in the south and they think the weather will be better. If it turns out not so great, they can't afford to move back because houses cost more - duh. I know a bunch who did the south move when they retired and it is not returnable. And the not retired people were not liberals but probably quite racist., my sister says the neighbors who are the most racist seem to come from the north.
My sister has been telling me to move to NC, but my life is here, I don't know people in NC (well i do but from message boards and we will probably not be good friends since they are like 40 years younger than me.)There is just so much more to do near NYC and friends to visit and people to go on vacation with, et al. Oh and good people to leave my dog with. I don't have to drive anywhere, I can walk to most stores and movie theaters and restaurants here. Plus there are buses down the street to most major cities and trains less than a mile away and senior services up the kazoo. There is nothing like that where she wants me to move. What happens when she dies and I can't drive - there would be no one to help. Here at least there are younger siblings that can help.
