In reply to the discussion: That "reformer",New Jersey Gov Christie, Cut $1.6 Billion from Public Education.. Koch update.. [View all]no_hypocrisy
(52,697 posts)Funds are mostly provided through property taxes. Average taxes in suburbs are more than $10,000 annually.
You ordinarily make up for the loss is
of state aid to public education by raising property taxes, but . . .
1. The cost of higher property taxes is reaching the point that folks are moving out of the state, so raising taxes is not a fail-safe option, and
2. Christie campaigned on keeping municipal taxes from going up. There's a statewide edict that all towns/cities must keep annual increases of taxes to 3%. Can't raise taxes higher? Then cut programs.
Christie knows this will be the result. And adding insult to injury, his administration is advocating for charter schools to "share" what meager public funds remain for public schools. It's a vicious cycle: take away money from public schools, claim they're failing, and then take away more money, and give that money to charter schools.
