So my 107-YO Grandmother passed away today.

It was a pretty good run and we should all be so lucky as to have a life such as hers.

She was born in rural White County, Indiana and lived on a farm until moving into town in the early 1970's. She had 3 daughters and one son, my dad, who was the youngest. They grew a variety of crops, raised cows, chickens, goats, pigs, also bred plow horses and beagles. Later diversified and owned a roofing company until Grandpa passed in the mid-70's. After that she traveled extensively including Russia, Italy, Germany, etc. Here eyes were clear and bright, she made sense during most conversations, and was always cheery and upbeat. She was a skilled seamstress, never drove a car and her life experiences made her quite a raconteur.

She would spend summers in Indiana and winters in Florida with her daughters. About a year and a half ago, she attended my brother's wedding in Chicago. She moved around from table to table chatting (despite the loud DJ) and hardly ever sat down. They say if it's too loud, you're too old; she had no problem with the volume and had quite a nice time.

She was mostly in very good health until a couple of months ago when hospitalized after a fall. Two weeks ago her doctor recommended hospice care, moved a hospital bed into her home and assigned two shifts of visiting nurses. She demanded the bed be removed, dismissed the nurses and the following morning awoke demanding a breakfast of potatoes with onions and a fried egg.

A pretty good run!
