In reply to the discussion: Online Propaganda - Invisible Tool of Secret Government [View all]2banon
(7,321 posts)97. Thanks for bringing this to our attention Octafish..

Ok.. so the propaganda policies are tucked in between the sheets of the beomuth defense bills - purposely written in a way too voluminous and dense manner for the public to decyfer and debate vis a vis investigative journalists prior to it's passing, practically impossible to repeal after passage.
so with that we have the Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012, which passed as part of the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, and went into effect this month.
Btw, Back in the mid to late 70's Carl Bernstein wrote a piece published in Rolling Stone exposing the CIA infiltrating U.S. News agencies to promulgate propaganda formally relegated to VOA. This was before the advent of Cable News, before CNN was created and launched. This of course was given virtually no mention or attention in mainstream news publications/broadcasts.
I think we see how this has manifested on this site, Snowden/NSA/Crimea etc.
Last year, two USA Today journalists were ensnared in a propaganda campaign after reporting about millions of dollars in back taxes owed by the Pentagon's top propaganda contractor in Afghanistan. Eventually, one of the co-owners of the firm confessed to creating phony websites and Twitter accounts to smear the journalists anonymously. Additionally, just this month, the Washington Post exposed a counter-propaganda program by the Pentagon that recommended posting comments on a U.S. website run by a Somali expat with readers opposing al-Shabab. "Today, the military is more focused on manipulating news and commentary on the Internet, especially social media, by posting material and images without necessarily claiming ownership," reported the Post.
Kudos to the writer crediting Michael Hastings.
Michael Hastings was certainly made the ultimate example of DoD retaliation targeting journalists who dare expose corruption and wrong doing, regardless of citizenship.

Yes, it is Un-American. GCHQ and JTRIG are British intel divisions. This is not an NSA program. nt

Yes, I'm sure it was presented in-depth to the NSA because they had no interest in it.

Bamford spelled out the situation. Two weeks later, the Pentagon dropped the I-Bomb.

Absolutely, there are some classic examples of that here. But the good thing is we recognize them.

Yes, it's hard to believe Greenwald would pass off British intel as an NSA program.

Thanks for mentioning Greenwald. The smear campaign against HIM is a perfect example of the OP.

I think Intercept is proving its true colors by passing this off as an NSA program. It isn't. nt

It was GREENWALD who called out Bush and Cheney on ILLEGAL N.S.A. Spying back in 2007.

Thankfully if you look at recs and replies alone, most DUers are not fooled by the propaganda.
