Couldn't find the words to reply on my own. This sums it up well for me:
Will Evangelicals Continue to Support Torture?
~Snip~
Jesus was arrested unjustly, promptly tried and convicted in a kangaroo court, and then tortured. He was savagely, sadistically beaten, his body ravaged. Jesus was tortured to death. Evangelicals believe their God bore as much suffering as it is possible for a human to bear, and he bore it at the hands of men in military gear who relished the cruelty.
Forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. Those are the words Jesus said of his torturers, and they are true of all torturers they seem not to understand their actions, neither the damage they are doing to the victim, nor the damage they are doing to themselves, nor the damage they are doing to the country that is foolish enough to sanction such violence. They are also true of people who support torture, who believe it can save lives or protect a country. The majority of white evangelicals who support torture do not know what their support means for their own souls, much less the soul of their country.
