55. Police funerals in New York have a large and solemn tradition.

Jan 2015

Dating back to the 1840s.

They are major events and the procession is a virtual parade, an extremely somber occasion.

Had someone tried this at a cop funeral during the '60s, they would have caught a beating at the precinct cop bar after the funeral.

These officers are disrespectful of that tradition. Would they want that escapade at their own funerals?

They are disrespectful to the slain officers. Because they consider them as lesser officers, "tokens".

They're disrespectful to the families. The kids have learned that their fathers weren't treated with the same respect as other cops.

They're disrespectful to the mayor, because of his minority child (children?). Had a mayor with a white family made the same address on race relations, they would have chalked it up to "politicking" and ignored it beyond a few cynical locker-room jokes.

They're ultimately disrespectful to themselves and the shield they wear. Shows how much they care about the job.
