In 1980, Laurence Silberman, then a lawyer in private practice and a former US Ambassador to Yugoslavia, on behalf of the Reagan-Bush campaign, met with a man who claimed to represent the government of Iran. After the election, Silberman was appointed to a powerful federal appellate circuit, from which he advanced right-wing causes, such as overturning Oliver North's Iran-Contra convictions and empowering one Kenneth Starr. Among Silberman's proteges are Clarence Thomas and John Yoo. In the present day, Judge Silberman compares journalists who say "Bush lied America into war on Iraq" to the liars who gave rise to Hitler and the Third Reich.
