There have been cases here in Japan where GMO crops have contaminated non-GMO crops. Most if not all of Japan's agricultural cooperatives are against them.
Monsanto Japan has a 2000 square meter plot of GMO corn and soybeans in the town of Kawachi that is guarded with a big fence and is covered to prevent pollination with non-GMO crops. That is because
"if the pollen that spreads out from the (GMO) fields pollinates the crops of surrounding farms, then Monsanto can sue for infringement of intellectual property rights (the crops are at this time grown in covered "houses" "
"According to Mie Yasuda of Luna Organic, 'There have been hundreds of cases in the United States and Canada where small farmers whose fields were pollinated by Monsanto pollen have been sued. And a lot of those farmers have gone bankrupt.'"
