I agree with him that indifference is a huge problem.

The rest of it - fear of black power/retribution - this might be a generational and regional thing. I just don't believe most white people under 35 think this way at all. To whatever extent this belief exists among white Americans, it is eroding. Most who hold these views are old. It's difficult (although not always impossible) to change older people's views. Shouldn't we focus more on youth and the next generations instead?
