(60,413 posts)The main one would be that he would have to take back the word "Democratic socialism" to what it really is. Many in America hear "socialism" and thing Communist Russia -- not Scandinavia. It would be a huge (maybe not doable) step to get people to instead see that he is speaking of Scandinavia. The fact is that Scandinavian counties have among the highest average income and regularly rate very high on any scale that attempts to score "happiness".
Then look at the acceptance of programs - like Social Security and Medicare - that come closest to democratic socialism. These are the Gold Standard for government programs.
Consider also that the President can only lead, he or she can not unilaterally change the government. The President has more latitude on foreign policy.
I don't think Sanders will win the primary, but if he does it is because he has been able to sell his values in terms that will resonate with Americans. Consider that, while it took a very divided election, with two Democratic candidates, for him to win the first time as mayor of Burlington, VT -- he won his last term in a landslide against a person who had BOTH the Republican and Democratic line. He will then start with the 40 or so percent of the Democratic vote that any Democrat will get -- because the alternative is the Republican.
Lastly, what's with the obnoxious attack that he does not comb his hair? That is as ridiculous as if I pointed out that Condi Rice (or John Kerry for that matter) as Secretary of State was more consistently well groomed - with her hair always neat and attractive - and more physically fit than Hillary was. However, just like Bernie's hair, how well groomed the Secretaries were was not important to how they did their job. I assume you would agree with me that no matter how well dressed or coiffed Dr Rice was, HRC was the better Secretary of State.
