There was no middle class. The Romans and their flunkies at the top and everyone else very poor. Basically 99% of people lived in circumstances similar to what you describe. There was no capitalism. Marx would tell you that society was a pre-feudalistic society. In Marxist theory socialism and communism are only possible after capitalism.
