(37,468 posts)We on DU are part of the 1% (?) who really pays attention to national and state politics, and actually gives a damn. Enough of a damn to vote SOMEHOW SOME WAY. We are NOT apathetic, at least not as much as most people.
Most voters (who are even registered) aren't that concerned about elections. They are worried about money, their jobs, their families, their health, etc etc etc.. Way down the list comes that horrible word, politics. They aren't paying attention to things on a regular basis.
The result ? The motivated wins elections, and sadly to say, the Republican base is pretty damn motivated. That's just a fact. They vote during off-year elections, and of course during presidential election years too.
If Democrats had wonderful turnout for every state and national election, there would no issues about this. More states would have Democratic governors, Democratic legislatures, and a Democrat would win the national election every time, from what I know of national stats. That's not the case.
