In reply to the discussion: What are people thinking when they abandon pets? [View all]mountain grammy
(28,018 posts)37. My sweet little dog was abandoned.
Probably from a puppy mill, as he's supposedly a "designer dog." Problem is, only one good hip. Both his front legs were broken and healed crooked, probably while he was on his own. He was 6 pounds when he was picked up and our dog catcher said she had been trying to capture him for a month. Vet said he'd be worth a lot of $ if he had two good hips, but was thrown away, rejected as imperfect. And now, with two crooked legs and bad teeth (had to have 7 extractions) he's a mess.
Two years later, we still love the little mutt. Sometimes I hate my species too.

Sometimes they have to leave, and can't find a affordable place that takes pets.

Some people buy into the feral argument, I think. That cats, especially, can live without people.

Some people amazingly think the pets will do better than being sent to the animal shelter.
