4. Virginia gets a bad rap

There is a lot of progressive Virginia, even in the South. There are outright hippie colonies in the mountains. The problem is the wealthier class is conservative and dominating the political picture. Also, Virginia was terribly infected by "the Southern Strategy": there is a lot of racial segregation in South-Western Virginia, and the tolerance for social services is almost nil even though there is almost no non-farm/non-factory/non-mining economy and tons of people need assistance, especially with health care (because it's hard to attract professionals of any sort to rural areas). The teen pregnancy rate is sad.
