But Hungary hasn't been the "innocent" victim it pretends to be. Many Hungarians were (and are) xenophobic. They participated in deporting over 400,000 Jews to Auschwitz in the summer of 1944, of whom 99% were gassed on arrival. They have managed to blame Germany for this atrocity, but the Hungarian Arrow Cross did much of the action(s) alone.

There's a new xenophobic organization afoot with a similar uniform. They claim to be a "Christian" nation, and they certainly don't want to have the "dirty, non-Christian hordes" crossing their borders and setting up housekeeping. . . .

My guess is that this attitude is more prevalent than we imagine.

I was in Budapest in 1986 and wanted to see the Jewish Cemetery where my great grandmother was buried. I had to show an ID, as the caretaker was afraid of vandalism.
