(60,498 posts)Here, though I think they are hoping that Kasich could emerge as the consensus nominee -- and he likely is better than the other three. Just as we know on the Democratic side that the states that have voted include more southern states than northern states. If the tide moves against Trump and more people reject him, if the choice is Cruz and Kasich, it is possible that Kasich could end up with as many delegates as Cruz. In this scenario, where Trump is kept below 50% - with most delegates earned early, so people could say that he failed - if Kasich either beats him on delegates (unlikely) or is second, with Cruz third, he could win if most DELEGATES are themselves party stalwarts.
To me, the ONLY Democrats who might be likely to do this are ones, who 1) see this as a likely Republican year and want a saner nominee AND who are not really in either the Sanders or Clinton camps. The race is too close between Sanders and Clinton for anyone with a real preference to not cast their vote there.
