7. Not 50 years, it happened with Ronald Reagan

... but yeah, I agree with everything except the number. Reagan was elected in 1980, so it's been maybe 37 or 38 years. That's when the GOP was taken over by pod people.

There's been a lot of talk about Nixon and Watergate lately on DU (and rightly so) but that was done by a relatively small group. In the early 70's there still Republicans who were patriotic, good citizens, and country-before-party. I grew up in the Midwest and my parents and grandparents were proud Republicans. For many years I remained inpedendent because I used to think there might be a time that I might want to vote for a Republican.

I came of age in 1972, voted Dem for the first time, and I have to tell you that I've never voted for a Republican for any major office. I finally realized that I never will vote for a Republican ever, and I joined the Democratic Party in 2008 because I wanted to support Hillary in the primary. I'm glad I did, because the reality is that the GOP is evil.

However I'm old enough to remember Eisenhower who was (mostly) a good president, and I grew up in the 50's & 60's when it was still respectable to call oneself a Republican. There's no self-respect left among those people though.
