21. Maybe that's what is confusing me...

...I know the origin of the word is from the "King's court", which was comprised of his Courtisans, a group who together assisted him in making dcisions (and other fun activities).

Which is why I think of today's American court as being the entirety of all participants, including the clerks, the defendents, litigators, witnesses, etc. whom, together, inform the "court's" decisions, officiated by the Judge.

And, as a paid employee of that court system, I assumed the Judge to be considered staff (which is a legitimate term for paid employees).
