And why should they feel bad about fighting a war they didn't start, in direct defense of their homeland?

A modern war against an entrenched enemy in a densely populated urban setting? Yeah, lots of non-combatants will be killed. Hamas chose to start that war and the Gaza population danced in the streets when they did.
