(11,841 posts)Mine did the same thing. And when I grew up in the late 70s, we didnt have much but we never felt poor. I guess if it was today, I'd think we WERE. There are so many people today who equate poverty with a dollar figure, when its much more than that. My brother would be considered poor by the government based on his income and where he lives. But HE doesnt think he's poor. If you ask a child "have you ever gone to bed hungry", of course a lot of them will answer yes. So have I. Who hasnt? But you cant use those answers to say "millions of children are going to bed hungry".
Now a lot of people see what the damn Kardashians have on TV and think they're poor because THEY dont have it too. Extra cars, trips, clothes, phones, DVR,sat tv, 2000 sq ft home, fancy watch, $100 sunglasses, $200 Jordans, the list goes on.
Of COURSE a lot of people are on the edge or below it. And they need help from all of us. Thats why i give to the local Salvation Army, Goodwill and the local food bank when I can. Many others around here do the same. But there are also a lot of people out there looking for any reason to label someone "poor" because it suits their goals.
