He was one of the enemy. His group declared war on the IS.

War is between groups.

During a war, you kill members of the opposing group.

Communal violence is anathema to Western views. It used to be common in the West, but it died out a few hundred years ago (at least as far as society that was "educated" and "elite"--some groups never quite stopped believing in it).

In an individualistic society, you kill those who are guilty. In a society where such things are deemed properties of the group, killing any member of the group can suffice. This has gotten Americans and others in trouble in Afghanistan and Pakistan, in Iraq. It's gotten Israel in trouble with its neighbors.

If you don't understand another culture's POV, you make incorrect assertions about what they believe, or you assert that yours is the only right POV.
