Last week, millions of Americans — and people globally — were shocked by an argument that occurred in a meeting between Donald Trump, JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (and others). Many have pondered: what on earth were Trump and Vance thinking when they publicly got into an argument and lectured another world leader whose country is under attack?

There is a straightforward case one could make for why the altercation could be a political liability for Trump. A solid majority of Americans sympathize with Ukraine in the war. For instance, in a recent Economist/YouGov survey, 58% of Americans say that in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, they sympathize more with Ukraine.

Just 3% say they sympathize more with Russia, while 27% say they sympathize more with “neither.” Twelve percent are not sure.

This includes 47% of Republicans who sympathize more with Ukraine.
