off the bed, ran down the hall and across the living room to the dining room, jumped up on the table and ran across it, and turned by pushing off the dining room chair on the other end -- something I'd seen her do before, so I knew that was what she was doing. She pushed off hard enough to knock the chair backward, but it must have teetered off-balance for a second or so, because by the time it hit the floor she was back on my bed, looking into my eyes as I opened them. I had to laugh. And I got up and fed her.

When she was little she used to follow me around the kitchen clawing the back of my heels and ankles till I fed her, meowing all the while (she was half Siamese).

And when she was littler than that, I once fell asleep while bottle-feeding her, sitting cross-legged on the kitchen floor at 2 in the morning, and woke to find she'd crawled into my pajama sleeve and fallen asleep under my wrist.

Miss that cat, who's been gone for 13 years now...
