which occasionally comes to my yard, drawn by the squirrels and birds to the bird feeders. I've seen it get down into the bushes to chase them, but never catch anything. One time, a squirrel that got away from it by hiding under a loveseat/glider on the covered porch, stayed there for about 20 minutes after the hawk left. Poor thing was really traumatized by it nearly being caught.
Years ago, in Chapel Hill, we lived in a 3 story house on a hill in the woods. I was sitting at my desk on the top floor when I saw a hawk fly by with a squirrel in its talons! The poor squirrel was not yet dead.
Nature can be vicious.

Eyeballing the bushes inside the fence by the bird feeder.
