"album" means simply a collection of things, such as a photo album. "LP" is typically used to specify a 13-inch disc of music. But a CD, a cassette tape, 8-track tape or reel-to-reel tape, are also "albums," because they're collections of songs, same as an LP. Nobody ever calls them that, though because English is weird.
