3. This song is from the cusp of a change in technology

In 1971 recording and mixing tech had reached a modern peak that wouldn't be exceeded until digital tech in the late 1980's. This song uses all the tricks in that book to create a master class in music composition.

But as they were recording this the synthesizer was becoming known, and used by a few vanguard composers like Walter (Wendy?) Carlos and Vangelis. The synth would go on to dominate the sound of the late 70's both in Disco and other genres.

By comparison with all that work this song has a very 1960's feel but with a polish that could not have been achieved even a few years before it was created.
